more progress with the skirt..

Well, after making the sable cookies I felt inspired to go back to the skirt in progress. I was a little bit baffled on how I was going to attach the lining, since I had already attached the facings to the skirt. So, I improvised on how to attach it- success!! I could not follow the directions completely from the Connie Long book, so I attached the lining by sewing it to the top of the facing, 3/8 of an inch away from the raw edge. It looks lovely!! (Well especially with the bias binding edge of the facing and seeing the lining out of the same fabric. It looks so chi chi!


There is not too much left to do with the skirt- hem the lining, attach the lining at the zip and add the glorious satin ribbon to the front of the skirt!

Sables on a Monday...

Well, I finally made the time to try one version of a sable cookie recipe. This version is from the Joy of Cooking. I am really curious to see how they turn out this afternoon.

I did my big experiment- making my own powdered sugar- one cup of granulated sugar with one teaspoon of corn starch... oooh what a mess!! Next time I better do this in a regular blender and not use the hand held blender. It was pretty funny to see clouds of corn starch and sugar, floating around me.

This is the recipe that I am testing and going to make with my students this week. Boy, I hope that they turn out.

The next version is going to be a more authentic version called punitions. They are not quite as sweet as these.

Well, I finally am working on the voile lining for the skirt. This time I am trying a new technique for sewing the lining - the quick and easy method that is in the Connie Long book- Sewing Linings from Taunton Press. It is a slightly different process and I want to stretch my skills.

I will post a picture after I finish the lining of the inside..

Sunday is a good day!

Well, today I did end up cutting out the lining for the skirt. Not only did I cut out the lining, I ended up going on a cutting spree! Five tops were cut out and now there is no excuse for me not to do some sewing. Hopefully I can get the lining finished next weekend.

I did not make the sables today, but that's okay. Maybe tomorrow after work when I get home.

It has been a really great Winter Break. Tomorrow is back to work.

Tonight's the night

This entry has no reference to the song by Rod Stewart at all! It just seemed apropos that I finally had the opportunity to make the new version of the cauliflower soup that I found online. I wanted one that has minimal dairy in it, so if I wanted to I could make a vegan version of the soup.

DH loved the aroma, as it simmered. Success!! We both loved this new recipe. For the first time I did use butter and tried it with a smattering of bleu cheese. DH chose to not try his serving with the cheese.

It was the perfect dinner on a cold and rainy night.

Onto other great foods- there is nothing like a wonderful piece of candy or pastry treat.
